There are countless books, movies, podcasts, and websites discussing the myriad theories about intelligent extraterrestrial life. Astroethics is the first to look specifically at the ethics, or lack thereof, in preparation of, and contact with, encountering life beyond that which is currently known.
Many theories require at least a baseline of belief in the topic in order for the reader to accept the narrative. One of the unique aspects of Astroethics is that the reader, whether an ardent adherent to the thought that life beyond ours is non-existent or a believer that they, themselves, have been abducted, or they fall somewhere in between, is irrelevant to the discussion herein.
Taking theories from many well-known, and some lesser-known, philosophers, theologians, and legal scholars, Christopher Johnston uses those views in his completely new inquiry regarding intelligent extraterrestrial life. As is always the case in philosophy, certain presumptions are made in order to develop thoughts but it is up to the reader to determine whether these are meritorious arguments. If nothing else, these ideas are an excellent starting point for discussion on this previously ignored topic; how do we, as a species, approach intelligent extraterrestrial life in a galactically ethical way that maximizes the benefits of the relationship while minimizing harm.
More simply, as goes the quote, often attributed to Hippocrates (460-370 BCE), do no harm.
Astroethics is the branch of ethics that concerns itself with considering, discussing, and interacting with intelligent extraterrestrial life in a moral and altruistic manner.
Drawing from philosophy, theology, history, and law, it is the goal of astroethicists to develop a framework of thought regarding intelligent extraterrestrial life that takes into account other ethical systems that may be found throughout the galaxy rather than viewing it solely through our Earthly lens.
